If you’re relaxing on your narrowboat holiday on the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, you’ll be looking for some excellent places to sup a pint of beer and eat a great meal. There are so many along the route of the canal or in nearby towns and villages. Here are five of our favourites where you’ll get an excellent welcome:

1. Welcome To The Coach & Horses Inn, Llangynidr

This old coaching Inn hidden away in the lovely village of Llangynidr is surrounded by the Brecon Beacons National Park and overlooking the delightful Brecon and Monmouth Canal. A large and peaceful garden overlooks the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal with stunning views over the local countryside and Llangynidr is the perfect location for access to the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and the historic market towns of Crickhowell and Brecon. Chef and patron Shaun Ellis is well known for the warmth of his welcome and the excellence of his cooking so stopping off for lunch or dinner here will be one of the highlight of your canal boat holiday. 2. The Goose & Cuckoo, Upper Llanover

It wasn’t at all surprising to us that Prunella Scales and Timothy West popped into the Goose & Cuckoo during their time cruising the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal recently. You can enjoy a hearty home-made meal by the fire in traditional surroundings or sup a beer in the beer garden with stunning views of the Blorenge mountain in fine weather. It is famed for its selection of real ales, lagers, ciders, and wine, and you can play darts or cards with the locals as you while away an evening. The pub is one of the few in the Llanover area. The 19th Century lady of the manor, Lady Llanover, was a fervent teetotaler who banned pubs from her estate. It was originally called the New Inn, but was renamed in the 1880s after two sisters who ran it – after the insults they had for each other!Now, you’ll see pet geese and goats, and the pub provides a warm welcome for dogs. 3. Tafarn y Bont, Govilon

Govilon is the perfect place to stop for a pint and a bite to eat. Just a few minutes’ walk away from the canal, across an old stone stile and down old stone steps, Tafarn y Bont gives you a welcoming atmosphere, live music, and a good meal.Its menu ranges from Thai cuisine to fish and chips. 4. Royal Oak, Pencelli

Right on the canal at Cross Keys Bridge (number 153) in the village of Pencelli near Brecon, this cosy pub has a beer garden adjacent to the tow path. Its thick stone walls, flagstones, open fireplaces, and low beamed ceilings give a traditional feel.There is real ale from local brewers Brecon Brewing and Tomos Watkin, and a selection of pub lunches including a good ploughman’s.

5. The Star Inn, Talybont on Usk

With a pub garden next to the canal, the Star uses locally-sourced ingredients to create delicious meals.There is a seasonal menu with bistro-style dishes alongside burgers and pies.Food is sourced from suppliers such as the Welsh Venison Centre and Lower Wenallt Farm. The Star provides an excellent menu for children – it’s not all chips with youngsters’ meals here! Ales include Wye Valley Brewery’s Butty Bach and Titanic Plum Porter.
